Hawker Hurricane aircraft (AF963) Scapa Flow
Discovery and Survey
|
In the summer of 2018, MV Birsay Boy, a fishing vessel operating in Scapa Flow, Orkney,
recovered an engine and thought to be from an aircraft. However, further inspection of the engine was not possible as it was removed from the fishing area and returned to the seabed at a location (co-ordinates recorded) close to the Barrel of Butter in Scapa Flow. The exact location of where the engine was returned to the seabed was passed to SULA Diving. Further investigations of the engine and the site it was recovered from was facilitated by funding support from Historic Environment Scotland. A report was compiled which detailed the result of side scan, remote video and diving surveys carried out on the site. The full report can be seen below,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, |
