Orkney Herald - Wednesday 26 August 1942
TWO WAAF'S DEAD: FOUR INJURED
Tragic Result of Seemingly Slight Collision
Two members of the W.A.A.F. were killed and four were injured as the result of a seemingly slight collision on the East Road. Holm, on Wednesday. Killed as a result of the accident were A.C.W.2 Sheila G. Munro (19) and A.C.W.2 Gillian P. Man. (20). The injured girls were :—Sgt. Mary S. Hutchison (23). A.C.W.I Jean Froggart (211, A.C.W.2 Marion Smith (21), and Alexandria Keith (22). None of the girls in the R.A.F. truck belonged to Orkney. 1n all there were 11 members of the W.A.A.F. in the vehicle involved, an R.A.F. utility truck, an officer in front with the driver, and- nine girls in the body of the truck. Just before midday the truck, driven by A.C.W. Helen Grant MacRae (18), met an Army 30-cwt. truck 50 yards east of the junction of the road leading to Hilltoft Farm and East Road. The Army vehicle was going towards Deerness and the R.A.F. truck in the opposite direction. The road at this point is narrow, and is flanked by grass verge and ditches. The police are of the opinion that at best it would allow only a few inches distance between the vehicles as they passed. They struck each other slightly on the' e off-side, so slightly, in fact, as to cause the drivers no apprehension. Yet two of the occupants of the R.A.F. truck were killed and four injured. Three were thrown into the roadway. The vehicles were only slightly damaged. They were both said to be travelling at 15 m.p.h. Apparently the girls on the R.A.F. truck were leaning on the canvas sides and those on the off-side thus took the full shock of the impact. Those on the near side were not injured in any way. From marks on the road it appeared to the police that both vehicles had been travelling we!' over on their own side of the road, their near side wheels, in fact, right on the verge. Just before colliding, however, both trucks apparently pulled slightly into the centre of the road and failed to clear each other by about 1 1/2 inches.
