FIRTH

Missing.—Deep regret was felt in the parish when it became known that Pilot Officer " Chris " Thomson had been reported missing. Mr. Thomson. who hail a close connection with this parish. through his mother. was a young man of great promise and ability, and was held in highest esteem by all with whom he came in contact. " Chris." the name by which he was popularly known. developed airmindedness early in life, and while a student. spent his holidays taking courses at flying centres, where he acquired a high standard of efficiency. At the outbreak of war he answered his country's call. He had been stationed at several points in the British Isles. Latterly he was attached to a Coastal Command squadron and was flying a " Sunderland " craft. The sympathy of the community is extended to his parents and to his other relatives here and in the South. Pilot Officer Thomson was in his twenty-second year.

POPULAR R.A.F. PILOT KILLED

Young Stromnessian Buried at Gibraltar

Stromness has lost one of its most promising lads with the death active service in the Mediterranean area of Sergeant-Pilot Leonard Sutherland, Royal Air Force Volunteer Restive. " Len Sutherland was the only son of Mr and Mrs. W. Sutherland. 64 Victoria Street. .Stromness. His father i the well-known Stromness - Orphir- Kirkwall bus operator. Sergeant-Pilot Sutherland was twenty-one years of age. Educated at Stromness Academy. he passed through the various classes with distinction and earned the Leaving Certificate. He proceeded to Aberdeen-University with the object of graduating and entering the teaching profession. That was in the autumn and winter cession, 1939-40. War had broken out and a call was made for volunteers for the R.A.F., so after attending the University for a year he answered the call and volunteered in October, 1940. Proving himself a very apt member of the Force, and being one hundred per cent. physically fit, he, was selected for special flying training in California, U.S.A.. where he spent Six months. On his way to the training centre there Sergeant Sutherland passed through Omagh Canada and spent a few weeks in Toronto, where he met more Orcadians. They did everything in their power to make him feel at home among them. The same can well be said of natives of Orkney in California, with all of whom he was deservedly popular and whose kindness he much appreciated. While in California. Sergeant Sutherland was entertained by many leading stars and public personages. On completing his course at Glendale, California.. he passed out and secured his " flying wings." being presented with the Gold Star Merit Award of the Polaris Flight Academy, bearing the following inscription:— " Leonard - Sutherland is herewith granted this School Gold Star Merit Award, and his name has been inscribed in the Academy's Hall of Fame in recognition of having completed the course of flying training without accident of any kind.—(Signed) Major Moseley, President, Polaris Academy."
Thereafter he returned home and was stationed at flying centres in England and Scotland.
Sergeant-Pilot Sutherland was a young man of much promise, outstanding appearance and winning personality. During his boyhood he was a member of Life Boys, passing due course into the ranks of 1st Stromness Company Boys Brigade. In sport he was very keen, and took an active part. in hockey and football. Golf appealed to him most, however, and he drove a long ball. Early in life he showed considerable ability as a musician, and in his connection with North Church, Stromness, he officiated occasionally at the organ and as a choir member, often rendering solos. Indeed, he was an excellent all round young man and a general favourite. The announcement of his death cast a gloom over the town, and the deepest sympathy is expressed for his sorrowing parents and members of the family over their heavy loss. The young pilot's funeral took place at Gibraltar.

ORCADIAN AIRMAN DIED IN SWISS TRAGEDY

Request for Information Information regarding an Orcadian named Spence, who was serving with the R.A.F. and who died after his plane crashed or was brought down in flames in Switzerland on the night of July 12-13, is asked for in a letter just received by Mr. James Ebben, last war veteran aid now custodian of the Earl's Palace, etc., Kirkwall. The letter is from a friend of Mr. Hibbert's—Mr. J. Fairlie, sr., 23 Bughtonhall. Terrace, Edinburgh—and includes the following:--
Would Sand Photo. ....
I am writing about an item in a letter which I recently received from my sister, who has been in Switzerland with her mistress for a good number of years and has, of course, not got out since before the war started. She says:— " No doubt you'll have read of the tragedy that happened near us here on 12-13th July. Fourteen of our brave men came down in their planes and were burned. A great thunderstorm was going on at the time. The explosion lit up Miss P--'s room. They had lost their way in the storm, and lightning way have struck them, but the Swiss D.C.A. claim to have brought them down. They were buried in St Martin's Cemetery, Verey, adjoining the graves of our soldiers (internees) of the Great War (1914-18). " One of the men was named Spence, Orkney. You might find out if any of your relations there know of that family. Miss P— would be very pleased to send a photo of the ceremony in the cemetery. We had to take our passports, but what a crowd." Mr Faitlie's letter to Mr Hilbert continues: Miss is the old lady to whom my sister acts as companion. I am afraid there are a good many Spences in Orkney, but you may have heard of the death, and I thought you were as likely as anyone to know. So if you know the family perhaps you will let me know. Of course you will understand that correspondence between here and Switzerland 'usually takes a long time, and, I am afraid, frequently goes amissing altogether. . . .

KIRKWALL PILOT DIED IN ACTION

The Late Flying Officer David B. Hume.

With deep regret his many friends learned last week of the death, on January 22, of Flying Officer David Balfour Hume, only son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hume, 15 Carter's Park Road, Kirkwall. He was 24 years old. A sister is Mrs. Doris Rumeie, wife of Captain A. M. Rumeie. Flying Officer Hume was born in Kirkwall and educated at Kirkwall Grammar School, thereafter serving the greater part of his apprenticeship in the Kirkwall branch of the National Bank of Scotland. He was called up as a member of the Territorial Army in 1939, having, in 1938, joined the Orkney Heavy Regiment of the Royal Artillery. His progress in the Army was very satisfactory, and he was a Sergeant, with first class award for skill at arms, when he volunteered for transfer to the Royal Air Force in response to in, appeal for Air Force recruits from the ranks of other Services. After being accepted by the R.A.F. he served some time in this country and subsequently trained for almost a year in Canada, where, at Christmas, 1942, he obtained his commission as Pilot Officer. Later he operated front England with Coastal Command, and in June, 1943, was promoted Flying Officer. He went overseas last October. It has been established that the plane (a long-range fighter) of which Flying Officer Hume was pilot came down in the sea. " The Orkney Herald " extends deepest' sympathy to the bereaved parents, and to all other friends and relatives.

KILLED IN ACTION.

Flight Sergeant Engineer Frank Buchan, R.A.F., news of whose death in action reached Orkney last week. Sgt, Buchan was the son of the late Mr. Frank Buchan, general merchant., St Mary's, Holm, and he carried on the family business until October 1942, when he joined the Royal Air Force. He received his initial training at a North of England seaside resort, and later was posted to West- England, Wales and South England. His untimely death ends what promised to be a very brilliant career, and we join his many friends in Holm and elsewhere in voicing our deep regret and extending sincere sympathy to all relatives and friends.
Over Enemy Territory. A correspondent. Mr H. P. Pakenham, writes:— We learn with great regret of the death in action of Sergt. Flight Engineer Frank Buchan, R.A.F., of Holm. Sergt. Buchan was first reported missing on the 25th September, after an operation over enemy territory, and later that day his relatives received the tragic news that he had made the supreme sacrifice. The body has been interred in Holm Cemetery, and on Saturday last a memorial service was held in the Church of Scotland Hut, Holm, which was attended by a large congregation of relatives and friends. The service was conducted by the Rev. J. Arthur. Frank, who was 23 years of age, went to school at the West Holm Public School and Kirkwall Grammar School. upon leaving he entered the business of Frank Buchan, general merchant, Holm. In October, 1941. he joined the R.A.F., and was promoted to the rank of Sergt. Flight Engineer in 1943. He was due for further promotion in the very near future. He will be sadly missed by his very large circle of friends to whom he had endeared himself by his charming, unassuming and altogether lovable disposition. To his relatives we convey our deepest sympathy in the grievous loss they have sustained. May they be fortified in this hour of great sorrow by the thought that " Greater love bath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends."
